How Accurate Is A Breathalyser ?

We only sell a select range of quality breathalysers. We don't sell novelty keyring type 'breathalyzers' as these are little more than toys. As with any purchase, in general terms, the more expensive the model, the higher the specification and accuracy. All our breathalysers feature advanced semiconductor sensors (the Drager, Alcovisor and BAC100 models feature superb fuel cell sensors, as used by UK and worldwide Police forces) . Some of our most popular models include the eg AL6000 Prestige or AL7000 Premium or the Alcovisor Mk X.

However, to ensure accuracy, it is important that a deep lung sample of breath is blown into any breathalyser. In addition, do not test until approx 15-20 mins after your last alcoholic drink as residual alcohol in the mouth will give a false reading. Toothpaste and mouthwash will also affect the reading in a similar fashion.

All our breathalysers are supplied with comprehensive easy to use instructions and general guidelines.

BAC100 Alcotector Professional

BAC100 Police Issue Breathalyser

The BAC100 is the only breathalyser in The World that combines Police grade accuracy with a built in thermal printer.

It offers Police grade accuracy at a fantastic price and is in use with the Police Forces of USA, China, Argentina, Thailand, China, India to name a few. This is a great breathalyser for employers wishing to screen/test their workforce, needing a hard print out but without the additional expense of a full UK Home Office unit such as a Drager 6510/6810. The combined printer offers substantial cost savings over a Drager breathalyser/printer combo.

Drager 6510/6810

Drager 6510 & Drager 6810 Police Issue Breathalyser

The Drager 6510/6810 both carry full Home Office Approval for use as roadside breathalyzers by UK Police forces. They are in use with a substantial number of UK Police forces. If you get stopped at the roadside by a Police officer, the chances are high that a Drager 6510/6810 breathalyser is employed. These are 'fuel cell' units which are expensive to manufacture but have unrivalled reliability and accuracy levels. It doesn't come any better than Drager for quality and reliability.

They are an ideal unit for professional organisations/employers who require a highly accurate and reliable reading for perhaps follow up disciplinary action/suspension. These units have been used as the basis for disciplinary action against employees in numerous cases where a lower grade semi conductor device would have carried little weight at an employment tribunal. In a nutshell, they are accurate enough for UK law enforcement.

If you are likely to need written proof of a breath sample for future action then we recommend the Drager 6810 series which has a wireless, portable printer. The 6510 has the same accuracy levels but does not have the facility to download the result to a printer.

Drager 6510 £725.00 inc vat & free delivery

Drager 6810 & Printer £1446.45 inc vat & free delivery

Limitations of Breathalysers

All breathalysers have limitations, even the Police issue Home Office Approved devices. In fact, there are no handheld breath test devices that are admissible in a UK Court as evidence of alcohol impairment. The rules vary from country to country.

This is mainly because a hand held Police issue breathalyser is normally only a screening device with accuracy levels of approx +/- 5% of a given sample.. In the UK, a positive test at the roadside will result in arrest and a further test carried out on a desk top highly accurate breath alcohol analyser at the Police Station.

.

Two tests are taken with the lower result being used.

Result less than 40ug/100ml - no further action taken

Result between 40 - 50 ug/100ml - blood or urine test required

Result above 50ug/100ml - no further tests - prosecution.

The requirement for a blood or urine test for laboratory analysis is a further requirement for admissibility in Court as evidence at borderline results as the desk top analyser also has a small margin of error for assessing alcohol within a breath sample. Above 50ug/100ml this small error is irrelevant hence the breath test alone being suitable as evidence.

Breathalysers in Aviation & Rail/Transport Industry

For obvious reasons, pilots, railway drivers etc have far stricter rules applied to them than road vehicle drivers. In the UK, the limit for drivers is 35ug/100ml BrAC (breath alcohol content). For pilots etc the limit is just 9ug/100ml BrAC. It is set at this level because it is possible for the body to manufacture its own alcohol resulting in ketones in a breath sample giving a false positive sample. It has been proven that certain diets can provide a false positive test and in fact there was an incident in 2007 where a commercial pilot failed a breath test which was subsequently overruled following a blood test laboratory analysis.

Ketones and Breathalysers

Handheld breath devices have serious limitations in this regime and therefore a blood or urine test is essential to remove false positive tests.

False Positive Tests

It has been scientifically proven that certain substances can have the effect of giving a false positive result for alcohol. In testing, mouthwashes, certain toothpastes etc can have this undesired effect. People suffering from acute diabetes may also offer a false positive test. The mouthwash effect is normally short lived but an awareness of this is essential.

Incredibly it is also possible to gain a false positive test from chewing a slice of bread immediately before a breath test ! This is an extremely short lived phenomenon, lasting for only a minute or two. It also requires the bread to be chewed for a long period before swallowing. In the US this phenomenon has resulted in many DUI (Driving Under the Influence) Defence Lawyers attempting to use this as a defence. For this reason no food or drink should have been consumed within 20 minutes of a test or the test can be deemed invalid and inadmissible in Court.

You Tube Video

Many countries have decided that a 0 alcohol limit is unrealistic and unenforceable given the limitations of hand held breathalysers, as a very large number of blood and urine tests would need to be performed to ensure that the body's natural alcohol had not caused a false positive result.

Additionally, a recent alcoholic drink will leave mouth alcohol in place for several minutes giving a highly inflated result, so a period od 20 minutes should elapse before testing.
